10 Common misconceptions about marketing on the Internet

Digital marketing is a dynamic activity. Because of this, it’s important for newbies and business owners to have a bird’s eye view of what does and doesn’t make sense when building marketing strategies. Unfortunately, falling victim to common myths about internet marketing can take you to a dead end. So to help you have a more successful online presence, we’re going to debunk 10 common misconceptions about digital marketing.

1. You will get rich quick
Marketing on the internet takes a lot of work. This is not a get rich quick scheme. It takes much time learning and failing before you will succeed. Your success is entirely up to you. You will reap what you sow.

2. You won't make any money
Again, you will reap what you sow. your key to success is through consistency and persistency. If

you are willing to learn and accept failures from time to time, learn from your mistakes and apply that knowledge - the money will come. Don't give up. There are lots of people who truly do make money this way.

3. Anyone can do this
If you tell yourself there is nothing to this, you will set yourself up for guaranteed failure. A profession such as this takes a lot of discipline and most of all the willingness to learn. It takes a lot of hard work and an open mind. You have to be willing to embrace new ideas as they come and take this seriously.

4. Not everyone can do this
This is also not true.

As long as you free your mind from this kind of skepticism, you have taken your first step. While this profession takes time to figure out, it is not hard to figure out. Remember, the only person stopping you is you!

5. It is too hard
Look within yourself. There is an online business in you. What do you know? What do you like? What do you need that has not been created yet? Answers to these questions and questions like them are the beginnings of you having the ability to set yourself apart from the crowd.

6. It will be easy
It will get easier, but you will have to do loads of studying. Spend many hours brainstorming.

You will spend many hours reading, writing, and learning what works and what doesn't. It will get tedious and hard to stick to. Persevere, your reward is coming.

7. It will only require 2-3 hours a day
At some point you will be able to automate most of your efforts. In the beginning, long hours are not unheard of. I have spent many 18 hour days in front of my computer.

8. This is not a real job
Yeah right! You will come across many skeptics. Or worse than that, people who do not reveal skepticism but merely look at you funny. Believe me, this is a real job.

You will be just as exhausted from working and researching all day as you would sling 50 pound sacks of flour all day. When you are mentally exhausted you will be physically exhausted. You work hard; don't allow the people who minimize your efforts get to you.

9. The only good reason to do this is for the money
That could not be further from the truth. There is a lot to gain; the money is a plus of course. Learning will always make you a better person. If you are happy with yourself, everyone else will be too. You can't beat the hours.

10. It takes years to learn online business
Not true. The best suggestion is to study hard.

Read your newsletters and the articles in them. Listen to those who are already successful. They are already telling you what to do and how to do it. Now you just need to listen and learn.

Every day thousands of people go online to make money but most of them fail miserably because they either truly believe one of the 6 Internet Marketing Myths or or all of them. You can read them below and discover the grain of salt in all of them.

Myth #1: Internet Marketing is EASY
This is probably the biggest myth of all, and let me tell you Internet marketing is hard, takes time, effort not mention money and anyone who suggests otherwise is trying to sell you a bunch of horse hockey. Granted that it's comparatively easier to brick and mortar in that there's no inventory to carry, no shipping of goods no sales staff and virtually no overhead, but a lot of work is still involved.

Myth #2: ANYONE Can Make Money Online
Folks, this is simply not true. Unless someone gets off their lazy boy recliner and download/read everything they can about internet marketing, and put an action plan in motion, they will never make a dime on the internet. DO NOTHING, MAKE NOTHING.

Myth #3: You Can "GET RICH QUICK" On the Net!
This is the trap that a lot of newbie internet marketers fall into, why? Because scammers make it sound so easy and let me tell you, chasing "get rich quick scheme" is a WASTE OF TIME!, money and energy. It just won't happen overnight. Instead do some research and find out what people really want and need then give it to them. Work with products/services that fill a gap or solve a problem and you'll increase your chances of success.

Myth #4: It's FREE to Do Business Online
This is one of my favorite myths because people actually believe it and it’s just not true. Compared to opening your first coffee shop or gift shop, internet business start-up expenses and maintenance cost are pretty low. Once you have your domain set up, you pay for internet connection, advertising, ongoing educations and scaling up. You can't expect to make money selling free stuff and ask others to do the same. It takes money to make money.

Myth #5: It's TOO LATE to Start an Internet Business
Most internet marketers would love to hear people say "It's too late now, too much competition, I should just pack my bags and go home, the internet is too complicated, etc...". Do you know why? the less people they have to compete with the better, which in turn will make them more money. Fight the good fight, persevere, persist, fine-tune, innovate and your business will take off.

The fact is, it's never ever too late to start anything and that includes internet business. I firmly believe that the internet is not going anywhere and you should too. Every year the stats will show you the number of people shopping online is increasing, their spending dollars are growing and the number of people going online is increasing also.

Myth #6: The BIG Money Talk is JUST HYPE
As I've told you before, "it takes money to make money" Well it's true, although you will be hard pressed to find experienced internet marketers to tell how much they spend on promoting and advertising. Sometimes, you have to dig a little deeper to find the truth in every hype you read. It's a fact that people that make a lot of money online also invest a lot on advertising, tools, resources and knowhow to get the job done.

If you are willing to take the necessary action to make 'big money' happen for you - it will. It takes time. You can criticize, be skeptical and sure that 'big money' can't happen for you - and it won't. Sit down and write a financial and sound business plan. The Local Chamber of Commerce can give you all the info you need to get started. If you believe that you will succeed you're right, if you believe that it won't work, you're right also.

To summarize, you have heard people's stories about how they're making a fortune on the internet and how easy it is but the reality is some stories are NOT out of this world or unrealistic but it just doesn't happen overnight. You just have to apply a bit of common sense into it, find what you love to do, have a game plan, stay focused and you, my friend, might find the right opportunity to make all your dreams come true.
